Remembering Daniel Ferguson

Daniel’s death registration lists “pneumonia” as the cause of death. However, due to his age and the period, I have included him in the count of Spanish flu deaths. He is laid to rest in Tillicoultry Cemetery, in a plot that we would later share with his parents, brother, sister-in-law, and niece. Their headstone is in good condition.

Daniel died on February 9th 1919, in Norwich War Hospital, aged eighteen. His death was registered on February 12th.

Daniel was born on May 24, 1900, at 55 Raburn Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow. His parents, John (a tobacco machinist) and Mary (nee Jackson), welcomed their first child. In 1901, the Ferguson family still lived in Glasgow, but by 1911, they had moved to 59 Hamilton Street, Tillicoultry. At the time, ten-year-old Daniel was attending school, and the family had grown with the birth of James four years earlier.

Daniel served in the 51st division of the Gordon Highlanders during the war. When Daniel died, the family relocated to 43 Hamilton Street, where they remained in 1921.
