Remembering George Smith Knowles

George rests in Mars Wark Cemetery in a familial grave. He succumbed to “influenza and pulmonary congestion” on February 26th 1919 at his home at 22 Alexandra Place, Stirling aged forty-three. The headstone is in good condition.

George was born on January 19th 1876 in Benholm, Kincardineshire to Andrew and Mary-Ann (nee Milne). He spent most of his childhood in Bervie, Kincardineshire.

By 1899 George had relocated to Stirling and working as a cabinet maker. That same year he married Mary Peter in Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire on December 29th. The couple resided at 32 James Street, Stirling. Their daughter Mary (commemorated on the headstone as “May” was born in 1901, followed by Margaret in 1902. The family would grow further with the birth of a third daughter Eva in 1904 and a son George in 1906. In 1911 the family resided at 1a Friars Street.

After his death, Mary and the family remained at 22 Alexandra Place. Mary survived George by almost thirty years.
