Remembering Captain Cyril Peel

Today I paid my first visit to Larbert Cemetery in Stenhousemuir to the east of Falkirk. Among the graves I found was that of Cyril Peel Captain of HMS Amphitrite. The headstone is an elegant Celtic cross in excellent condition, likely cared for by the Commonwealth War Grave Commission.

He died on November 8th at the Royal Naval Hospital in Larbert aged forty-two. Influenza and pneumonia was the cause of death. He was unmarried and both his parents were deceased. He was unmarried and survived by two sisters. A sick berth attendant was present at his death bed.

Cyril was born in Trenant, Cornwall on July 8th 1874 to William and Hester Ann Curtees. The family would later move to Tenterden, Kent.

Cyril was afforded a military funeral in Larbert Cemetery, which was well attended, a special train between Grangemouth and Larbert was run to allow fellow mariners to attend. His hat and sword rested atop his flag draped coffin.
