William died on the 3rd of February 1919 at the Endell Street Military Hospital in St Giles, Bloomsbury, London aged twenty-four. Influenza and pneumonia were recorded on the death registration. His body was repatriated to his home in Kilmadock, Doune, Stirlingshire. He is interred in Kilmadock Cemetery, his grave marked by a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.

William was born in Kilmadock on the 7th of August 1893; third son of labourer Thomas and Bridgett (nee Scuffield. In 1901 the family resided at 53 Balkerach Street, by which time William was aged seven and attending school. Ten years later the McLeod family resided at 117 Graham Street. William aged eighteen was employed as a labourer. Sadly, Thomas died the following year aged seventy-one.
When war broke out in 1914, Thomas either enlisted or was later conscripted into the armed forces. He served as a Guardsman in the Scots Guards. As with many victims I have encountered, It is likely he witnessed combat, survived and was optimistic about the post-war world, which he did not get to experience.
