Remembering Annie Paton Izett Barr

Annie died on the 1st of November 1918 of influenza and pneumonia aged thirty-three at Ella House in Haggs, Denny, near Falkirk. She lies in Bannockburn Cemetery in a lair shared with her in-laws and infant son. The headstone credits her as “Nellie Seamans Barr” for an unknown reason. The age provided on the headstone appears incorrect.

Annie was born on the 8th of October 1885 in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire to pit joiner William and Ann Sr (nee Paton). She was their fifth child and second daughter. The 1901 Census recorded the Izetts as residing at 14 Priestfield Terrace, Blantyre; housing built specifically to house mine workers.

Ten years later Annie aged sixteen lived at Greengairs Cottage in Blantyre and worked as a domestic servant.

On the 25th of January 1907 at aged twenty-one Annie married twenty-five year old mine worker Hugh Barr in Govanhill Glasgow. On the 11th of November their son Johnstone was born. Tragically he died aged one on the 28th of July 1909 at St Ninians, Stirling and was interred in Bannockburn Cemetery which has opened back in 1901.

In 1911 the Barrs resided in Dalziel, Motherwell, North Lanarkshire with their baby son William. The family later relocated to Haggs. Annie’s death registration cites Hugh’s occupation as an “underground manager”. It is possible that career advancement in the mining industry is what spurred their move to Haggs.

Following Annie’s death Hugh married Isabella Condie in 1919 in nearby Bonnybridge. The couple would have two children of their own; a daughter Ann and Hugh Jr. Hugh Sr died in Hillend Glasgow on the 8th of August 1945 aged sixty-five. He was interred in Denny Cemetery. He was to endure further tragedy before his own passing with the death of Hugh Jr on the 9th of February 1941 aged only in his early twenties. Isabella died on the 21st of June 1966 and was buried with her husband and son.
